A short but deeply moving pilgrimage trek to one of the most powerful Shakti shrines in Uttarakhand — perfect for beginners, families, and anyone seeking a meaningful first Himalayan experience.
Chandrabadni Devi Temple is an ancient and revered Shakti shrine located at an altitude of approximately 2,277 metres in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chandrabadni — a powerful form of Goddess Sati — and is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the most sacred sites in Hindu tradition associated with the divine feminine.
Unlike the heavily commercialised religious sites of the plains, Chandrabadni retains a raw, atmospheric quality. The approach through dense oak and rhododendron forest, the sound of temple bells carried on mountain wind, and the sudden opening of views onto the entire Himalayan panorama — this is a place that moves people deeply, whether they come as pilgrims or trekkers.
The summit offers an extraordinary 360° panoramic view of the Himalayan range — Gangotri peaks, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and on clear days even Nanda Devi are all visible. It is one of the finest viewpoints in the Garhwal Himalayas, and the fact that it remains relatively uncrowded makes it all the more special.
According to Hindu scripture, when Lord Shiva carried the body of Goddess Sati in grief, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to separate it into 51 pieces — each landing spot becoming a sacred Shakti Peetha. Chandrabadni is believed to be the site where Goddess Sati's torso (trunk) fell, making it one of the most powerful Shakti shrines in the entire Himalayan region. For devotees, a visit here is not just a trek — it is a profound act of devotion.
Chandrabadni is one of the most accessible meaningful treks in Uttarakhand. It requires no prior trekking experience, no special equipment, and can be completed comfortably by anyone in reasonable health.
This 2-day trek is designed to be unhurried and immersive. We drive from Rishikesh, trek to the temple, spend a peaceful night in the mountains, and return refreshed the next morning.
We depart Rishikesh by road in the morning, driving through the scenic Tehri Garhwal hills. The drive itself is beautiful — winding mountain roads, river valleys, and traditional Garhwali villages. We reach the base village / trailhead in approximately 3–4 hours.
The trek to Chandrabadni temple is a pleasant 3–4 km climb through dense forest. The trail is well-defined, shaded by oak and rhododendron trees, and gently gains altitude. As you near the summit, the forest opens up to reveal the magnificent temple — and behind it, a jaw-dropping panorama of the entire Central Himalayan range stretching to the horizon.
We arrive at the temple with time for a peaceful darshan (temple visit) and to sit absorbing the views as the light changes through the afternoon. Sunset from here is unforgettable — the peaks turn gold, then pink, then deep violet as the sky darkens. We stay overnight near the temple in a simple guesthouse or tent camp.
Wake up to a Himalayan sunrise that will stay with you for years. The early morning light on the peaks, the sound of temple bells, and the smell of incense in the cold mountain air — this is the magic of mountain mornings that no photograph can fully capture.
Attend the morning aarti at the Chandrabadni Devi temple — a deeply moving experience in this ancient, atmospheric shrine. Take time for prayer, reflection, or simply sitting in the presence of the mountains before beginning your descent.
We descend the same trail back to the trailhead and drive back to Rishikesh, arriving by afternoon. You return not just with photos, but with a genuine sense of having been somewhere meaningful.
One of Chandrabadni's great advantages is that it can be trekked throughout the year, making it a rare all-season Himalayan destination.
Rhododendrons are in full bloom along the trail, painting the forest in brilliant red and pink. Clear skies offer excellent mountain views. One of the most beautiful times to visit.
The forest is lush and green. Mild temperatures make trekking comfortable. Even during monsoon months, this trail is generally safe as it is not in a high-risk zone.
Crystal-clear post-monsoon skies deliver the most dramatic Himalayan views of the year. The best time for photography. Highly recommended.
Snow occasionally dusts the trail and the temple surroundings, creating a magical atmosphere. The cold is manageable with proper layers, and the temple takes on an ethereal quality in winter light.
