Walk through endless green bugyals, sleep under a sky full of stars, and wake up to one of the finest Himalayan panoramas in Uttarakhand.
Panwali Kantha Bugyal is a breathtaking high-altitude meadow hidden in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Located at an elevation of approximately 3,600 metres, this lesser-known gem offers trekkers an experience that few Himalayan trails can match — vast rolling grasslands (bugyals), ancient shepherd trails, dense oak and rhododendron forests, and unobstructed panoramic views of some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Trishul.
Unlike the crowded trails of Kedarkantha or Chopta, Panwali Kantha remains beautifully offbeat. You are unlikely to cross large tourist groups here — a true wilderness experience. The trail holds deep spiritual significance too, passing through ancient temples and sacred Garhwali villages that have remained unchanged for centuries.
This trek is ideal for those who have done 1–2 Himalayan treks before and are looking for something raw, real, and profoundly connecting — with nature and with themselves. It perfectly embodies the spirit of Vairagya Yatra: a journey of beautiful detachment from the noise of everyday life.
Our 5-day Panwali Kantha trek is carefully designed to give your body time to acclimatise while covering the most beautiful sections of the trail. All distances and timings are approximate and may vary by group fitness and weather.
The journey begins in Rishikesh, the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas. We depart early morning by shared or private vehicle (depending on your package) through the beautiful Alaknanda and Mandakini river valleys, passing through Devprayag and Rudraprayag — two of the five sacred Panch Prayags.
We arrive at the base village by afternoon, where we settle into our homestay. In the evening, your guide will brief you on the trail, safety norms, and what to expect over the next four days. Sleep early — the mountains start early.
The trek begins! We start on a well-defined trail winding through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine. The forest is alive with birdcall and filtered morning light. This section is relatively gradual and serves as a perfect warm-up for the days ahead.
As we gain altitude, the forest gives way to open patches with the first distant views of snow peaks. We arrive at our forest campsite by afternoon, giving you time to explore, rest, and absorb the silence of the mountains.
This is the highlight of the entire trek. As you climb out of the treeline, the landscape transforms dramatically — suddenly you are standing at the edge of a vast, sweeping meadow stretching to the horizon, with the entire Himalayan range laid out before you like a painting. Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Trishul — all visible on a clear day.
We set up camp right in the heart of the bugyal. Spend the afternoon wandering the meadows, watching clouds move over peaks, or simply sitting in silence with a cup of ginger tea. The campfire in the evening here is an experience you will never forget.
Wake up to a golden sunrise over the Himalayan peaks — this is why people trek. We spend the morning exploring the higher reaches of the bugyal and nearby viewpoints. Your guide will take you to spots that only locals know — hidden temples, shepherd shelters, and ridgelines that offer jaw-dropping vistas.
In the afternoon, we begin our descent back through the forest. The descent is easier on the lungs but demands careful footing. We camp again at the forest camp, and the evening has a celebratory mood around the campfire.
The final day. We descend through the forest back to the base village in the morning, arriving in time for a warm meal and hot tea at the homestay. After freshening up, we drive back to Rishikesh, arriving by evening. Many trekkers choose to spend an extra night in Rishikesh to relax by the Ganga before heading home.
Panwali Kantha is rated Moderate to Difficult. It is not a beginner trek. Here is what you should know before registering:
Panwali Kantha is open for trekking from May to early November, with two distinct seasons offering very different experiences:
The bugyals are lush green, rhododendrons are in full bloom, and snow patches still linger on the upper meadows. This is one of the most visually stunning times to visit. Weather is generally stable with clear mornings.
The meadows turn intensely green and the waterfalls are at their most powerful. However, trails can be slippery and leeches are common in the forests. Not recommended for first-timers.
This is arguably the best time to trek Panwali Kantha. The sky is crystal clear after the monsoons, visibility is at its peak, mountain views are spectacular, and the bugyal turns shades of gold. Highly recommended.
