About This Trek

Chandrabadni Devi Temple sits atop Chandrakoot mountain at 2,277 metres in the Tehri Garhwal district — one of the 51 Shakti Peeths of India, and one of the most peaceful short treks in the region. According to legend, the torso of Goddess Sati fell here as Lord Shiva carried her body across the heavens, making this one of the most sacred sites in the Garhwal Himalayas.

The trek itself is short and approachable — roughly an hour or two of walking through mist-laced forest trails from the base village, gaining height gently rather than steeply. It’s an ideal first trek for beginners, families, or anyone who wants a real taste of the Himalayas without committing to a multi-day expedition.

Why This Trek Is Special

What makes this route stand apart

From the temple summit, the 360-degree view stretches across the Garhwal hills to Surkanda, Kedarnath, and Badrinath on a clear day — a panorama that usually takes 3-4 days of trekking to reach elsewhere, available here in a single morning. The temple itself is austere and quiet, without the crowds of more commercial pilgrimage sites, and the walk up through misty oak forest has a stillness that’s hard to find on busier trails.

Why Travel With Us

Why do it with Vairagya Yatra

We treat this as more than a quick pilgrimage stop. Our guides share the temple’s history and mythology along the way, and we build in time to actually sit at the summit rather than rush back down — most visitors leave within 20 minutes; we don’t.

What you will carry back

A real, if brief, sense of what it feels like to climb toward something sacred. For many, this is their first Himalayan trek — and a gentle one that doesn’t ask too much, while still giving a genuine taste of mountain silence.

Who Should Join

Who should join

Complete beginners, families with older children, and anyone curious about Himalayan trekking but unsure where to start. No prior trekking experience needed — just reasonable walking fitness.

Who should avoid

This is intentionally a gentle trek — if you’re looking for a physical challenge or multi-day wilderness experience, consider our Panwali Kantha or Kaagbhusandi Tal treks instead.

What the Trail Feels Like

The path begins in the small hamlet of Jamnikhal, climbing through oak forest that’s often wrapped in mist, especially in the mornings. It’s a quiet, contemplative walk rather than a strenuous one — most of the effort is in the final stretch as the trail steepens slightly near the summit. Then, almost without warning, the trees clear and the temple appears, with the Garhwal hills falling away in every direction.

Time at the Temple

More than a quick darshan

Most visitors treat Chandrabadni as a brief stop — climb up, pay respects, climb down. We build in unhurried time at the top: to sit with the view, understand the temple’s place in the Shakti Peeth tradition, and simply be still for a while before heading back down. It’s a short trek, but the stillness at the summit is the part that stays with people.

“I expected a quick walk to a temple. I didn’t expect to want to just sit there for an hour.”

The climb from Jamnikhal to the temple takes roughly 2-3 hours depending on pace and fitness, covering about 7 km with a gentle to moderate gradient.
